Knowing what you’re getting into when starting an orthodontic treatment plan is always nice. You feel more prepared and on board with the different stages and steps required of you. Our Ocala cosmetic dentist likes to brief any interested patients on what they can expect during their treatment involving SureSmile® clear aligners.
Before you meet with our team and get into the small details, here’s an overview of the SureSmile process.
Clear Aligner Consultation
The process kicks off with a one-on-one consultation between you and Dr. Pruitt. During this visit, we’ll assess your dental needs and determine if
is the right option. This evaluation includes a thorough examination of the teeth, gums, and jaw structure using visual assessment as well as possible X-rays. We encourage patients to discuss their dental goals and any concerns they may have at this time.If we discover that you have a severe overbite, underbite, or open bite, Dr. Pruitt may consider referring you to a local orthodontist for other forms of treatment that will best serve your smile. For example, while they may not be your first choice, traditional metal braces are equipped to handle all malocclusion from mild to more serious bite issues.
Developing Your Custom Treatment Plan
Once we have confirmed that SureSmile aligners are suitable, Dr. Pruitt will put together a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique dental structure and desired outcome. This plan will consist of several dozen stages and within each stage, will be a set of .
We’ll use specialized computer software like advanced 3D imaging technology to create a precise digital model of your teeth. It’s with this detailed model that our dentist is able to map out the exact movements of the teeth throughout the entirety of your SureSmile treatment.
Digital Impressions & Aligners Creation
Fortunately, traditional dental impressions involving messy putty are not needed with SureSmile. Instead, digital impressions are taken using our intraoral scanner. Captured in just minutes, these impressions combine to show an accurate image of the teeth and gums, which is then used to fabricate the custom clear aligner trays. The aligners themselves are made from a smooth, BPA-free plastic, ensuring comfort and safety from start to finish.
Receiving the Aligners
Once the aligners are back from the SureSmile lab, we ask that you return to our Ocala, FL, dental office to receive your first set. So you’re not left in the dark, Dr. Pruitt will be sure to provide detailed instructions on how to wear and care for the aligners. Keep in mind that by choosing SureSmile, you’re agreeing to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing.
Wearing the Aligners
Each set of aligners is worn for about one to two weeks, depending on the individual treatment plan. The aligners work by applying gentle, consistent pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position, very similar to how metal or ceramic braces operate. As you progress through each set of aligners, you will notice subtle changes in your teeth.
Regular Check-ups
Routine appointments with our SureSmile dentist are essential to monitor the progress of your clear aligner treatment. These appointments typically occur every 6 to 8 weeks. During these visits, we’ll observe your teeth to make sure they are moving as planned and address any concerns you might have. New sets of aligners are also provided during these check-ups.
Occasionally, adjustments or refinements to the treatment plan may be necessary. If we notice at one of your check-ups that the teeth aren’t moving as expected, new digital impressions may be taken to create additional aligners. This step ensures that the treatment stays on track and achieves the best possible results.
Completing the Treatment
The average treatment length for SureSmile is around 12-18 months. Every patient is different so what might take a little over 12 months for one individual, could take 6-7 for another. Ultimately, treatment time varies based on the complexity of needed tooth movements.
Once the treatment plan is complete, Dr. Pruitt will recommend wearing an orthodontic retainer to maintain the new position of the teeth. Retainers are typically worn at night and help prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions.
Benefits of SureSmile
offer numerous benefits over traditional braces. Their clear design makes them nearly invisible, which is especially appealing for adults and teens who may be self-conscious about wearing braces. The aligners are also removable, allowing for easier cleaning and the ability to eat without restrictions. Additionally, the smooth plastic material reduces the likelihood of mouth irritation often caused by metal braces.
